The driving force behind this is the change in our society making the assumption of mothers having children at a young age, but it’s nothing like that today. As our society has changed with time, there’s been a positive metamorphosis. This positive positive metamorphosis allows children an increase of opportunities due to a better effect on families and society. They will have become a product of what they were taught by their family and these children will have a positive influence on our country. It is better for people to wait until their thirties to have children; the benefits of waiting include an increased income by the time a couple has children, the ability to further one’s education, and emotional support for the children.

There’s a parallel connection between between both the age you have a child and the income gains because the older a person is the better support he or she can give to the child. Couples who start their families at an older age have higher earnings due to job experience. Higher income increases their child’s opportunities, as well as it opens them for the world around them, this allows for success . It seems more conventional for older couples to wait, due to being more established financially. This can be confirmed by the endless studies done, scientists show a connection between both a couple’s age and their earning ability. Not only that, but in other aspects it improves our workforce, due to people choosing to work longer. As a result to this, the kids from working-class schools suffer, due a decrease in chances.

The Metamorphosis Stage

Ray Anderson was the founder and chairman of Interface Inc. Anderson’s goal was to make Interface a sustainable enterprise. However, this new idea challenged the people in Interface and their way of thinking. In order to find a solution, they began experimenting with new behaviors that go with the underline values of sustainability. This took over the course of eleven years. During that time Interface when through five phases of changes. These phases are called awakening, cocooning, metamorphosis, emergence, and engagement (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 44).

The first phase started in 1994, when a group of customers asked an Interface employee about their environmental policy. This cause a lot of frustration because the truth was that there was no answer. To solve this problem, Interface form a task force to find answers. The task force asked the Interface founder Ray Anderson to give a speech about his views on the company’s environment policy. Anderson wanted to give a meaningful speech but was frustrated because he didn’t have an environmental vision that made sense to him. While Anderson was trying to think of ways to deliver his speech, an employee gave him a book title “Ecology of Commerce” written by Paul Hawken (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 44). In this book, Anderson came face to face with his traditional ways, business responsibility, and unique idea presented by Hawken. After he read the book, he questioned whether or not he can do this. After a while he decided that he was going to try. With that comes an awakening meaning a new understand about the industry and the environment (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 45). This would result as a new vision for his company. During his speech on August 31, 1994, he challenged the company to “lend the way to the next industrial revolution by becoming a sustainable industrial corporation and, eventually, a restorative enterprise” (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 44). This was the start of a ten year process to make Interface sustainable.

The cocooning phase occurs between 1994 – 1996. They called this period the “figuring-it-out mode” (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 45). Interface wanted to become a sustainable company. However, they still didn’t know how to get there. What Interface needed at the time was guidance and inspiration. This is how the “Eco Dream Team” was form (Gies, 2011). The team inspired a new change toward Interface. They help in the process of redefining and promoting the company’s vision. What happen next made everything clear. Interface had a set of ideas and actions were taken place in order for to help the company progress towards the vision. What happen was that they form the “Interface Climb up Seven Faces of Mt. Sustainability” (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46). The seven faces included waste elimination, benign emission, and renewable energy, closing the loop, resources efficient transportation, sensitizing stakeholders, and redesigning commerce (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46). Their goal was to reach the summit of Mt. Sustainability by 2020 (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46). By the end of this phase, the people at Interface had a clear understanding of what sustainability means to them.

The metamorphosis stage occurs somewhere in 1996. The people at Interface started to understand and embraced this new purpose. Every time a decision was made, Anderson and his team would ask themselves these three questions (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46). First, is this idea good for the environment? Second, is this idea good for the people? Third, is this idea going to make Interface money? (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46) As Interface would constantly juggling with these three questions a new way of thinking emerged from understanding to belief (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46). Interface at this point came a long way from being confusing to now celebrating. This way belief is not only the ethically right approach to business but also the smartest approach (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46-47). The business world was watching as the case for sustainability began to form. Interface started to get notice as the “exemplar for industrial sustainability” (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 46-47) .

The phase of emergence is a process that is now coming into view. Interface was committed to continue even through the huge market turn down of the Y2K period (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47). The Y2K or “The Millennium Bug” is a problem in the coding of computerized system that was going to reach havoc in computers and computer networks around the world on the beginning of the year 2000 (Hoffbuhr, 1999). This period was the ultimate test of whether Interface’s sustainability values. Interface was fulling set on reaching the summit of Mt. Sustainability (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47). This journey brought many challenges and inspiration but it also proving the business model of a sustainability process (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47. From Interface point of view, sustainability is the smartest and the morally right thing to do.

Lastly is the phase of engagement. Engagement is a form of commitment and the actions are set into motion. Thanks to sustainability, the total waste elimination since 1995 has been a total of $366 million (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47). Also, Interface reduced its greenhouse gas emission by 37 percent from its baseline, through improved efficiencies and direct renewable energy purchase (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47). Lastly, Interface came up with the “ReEntry” program in which they recycle landfill material by 84 percent, and capture energy by 14 percent (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47).

In conclusion, Interface had to go through five phases in order for them to become sustainability. They finally made the vision into a reality. The people at Interface feel that their work has a different meaning and a higher purpose than just making carpets (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 47). Ray Anderson died of cancer in 2011 (Szatmary, 2012). He once said “when I am lying in my death bed, I can tell my grandchildren that I was a part of changing the business model so that the industry works with the environment and not against it” (Docherty, Kira, & Shani, 2009 pg. 48).
