Responding to a student DQ Why are you pursuing your career of choice? Do you

Responding to a student DQ Why are you pursuing your career of choice? Do you feel you’ve adequately researched this avenue? How important do you feel it is to pursue your passion?

 Student Response:
Ruby S
My career of choice is education, and it was a career that I decided to pursue based on how teaching others made me feel. More importantly, I pursued education because of how others felt when that understood or learned something they did not previously know. I have adequately researched this avenue and been in education for more than 20 years. All of my higher education degrees are in the field of education, and I have been blessed enough to serve in this capacity at multiple levels in the field.
I feel it is very important for me to pursue my passion. I do understand why Bohanes (2018) suggest telling people to follow their passions is not a good idea. My daughter is one of the people the author describes as not having a passion. Suggestion she “develop a passion” may be more beneficial to her (Bohanes, 2018). Since I have had this passion for so long, that is difficult for me to understand. I have remained in education for all these years because it is like “a calling” for me. While I am passionate about education, it goes beyond just being passionate. I feel so invested in my choice of career, and I want to leave a mark that will have a positive impact on education outcomes for years beyond my lifetime. I am also what may be called a lifetime learner. I love learning myself and I see the value in continuing to learn new things. I chose to earn a master’s degree in General Psychology (Health Psychology) because I would like to expand my education work to include community and individual health and wellbeing. I am excited about the possibilities ahead.
