The topic may be related to virtually any aspect of China’s long history of relations with Europe, from the earliest times through the mid-twentieth century.
you should cite: all direct quotations or paraphrasals, specific facts or figures, and any theories or ideas unique to a particular author. Unless otherwise indicated, your language should be entirely your own; if five or more words in sequence are the same as those in one of your sources, they should be in quotation marks. I prefer citations in the form of notes at the bottom of the page or the end of the paper, but will accept citations identifying the source and page number in parenthesis, providing that you include a bibliography at the end.

The bibliography itself should contain at least ten sources, and at least five of those must be printed books or articles rather than internet sites (though JSTOR articles are acceptable). I also do not accept citations from Wikipeida.
please bear in mind my injunction above about the need for a focused topic. Most of these are too broad as they stand and need to be narrowed considerably. You could also do a comparative paper on some feature of government, society, technology, thought, etc.
As a starting point for any research project involving Sino-European interactions, I recommend utilizing the major on-line history bibliographies relating to China and Europe and available through MetaLink at the Binghamton University Library website. Searching through JSTOR’s huge data-base of articles can also be helpful. Specifically I would suggest:

For China: Bibliography of Asian Studies
For medieval Europe: International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)
There is no single bibliography for or modern European history, but the following are helpful:
Historical Abstracts
19th Century Masterfile
English Short Title Catalogue

What can we learn from The Question of Hu about the interactions between Europeans and Chinese in the early eighteenth century? Do you consider the case John Hu to be emblematic of those interactions or an aberration, an exception to them?

The Rites Controversy was one of the most important episodes in the long history of the Jesuit mission in China, and one that generated its own complex history. Using the accounts of it in Waley-Cohen, Gregory and Mungello, write an essay about the controversy that addresses one of the following two questions: a) were the Jesuit attempts at accommodation doomed from the outset because of the issues raised by their opponents in the Rites Controversy?; or b) how different were the understandings of the controversy on the part of four groups: the Jesuit proponents of accommodation, their clerical opponents, Chinese converts, and the Chinese emperors?
