The Society Has Dramatically Changed With The Evolution Of Technology

Introduction: Technological Progression and Societal Transformation

Throughout all of human existence, we can mark advancements in society by our technological innovations. From when the first humans created tools to the invention of the automobile, technology has evolved and changed as we have. With technological advancements comes power, the power to change society, and the power to bend the Earth to our will. However, technology also brings along its own slew of problems, and in some cases, society struggles to change and keep up with the way technology affects it. In today’s society, this is more relevant than ever before. The rising influence of technology on the workforce can be analyzed by focusing on three main components: past influence and trends of technology, current transitions to automation, and the potential of future technology.

The Industrial Revolution and Structural Transformation

The American Industrial Revolution is one of the best eras of history to study when looking at how technology affects society. In many ways, the industrial revolution is the reason our society is structured the way it is currently. It showed a great shift in the modernization of labor. This was the time when the world shifted from the manual labor structures of the past and adopted the new ways of machinery and factory-driven workforces. The use of machines to replace human labor spread throughout Europe and North America. This transformation is referred to as the industrialization of the world.

These processes gave rise to sweeping increases in production capacity and would affect all basic human needs, including food production, medicine, housing, and clothing. Not only did society develop the ability to have more things faster, it was also able to develop better things. These industrialization processes continue today.

Before the industrial development, there were no machines that mass-produced products, and the working conditions and living conditions were terrifying.[2] Although during the industrial development, workers, amongst others, were angry with the change that was occurring, they soon saw that scientific and technological developments would make their lives much easier.

Transition to the Age of Computers and Connectivity

Scientific and technological discoveries are made every day. However, only some of those discoveries are practical enough to use in our everyday lives. Now, it seems completely mundane to have machines and robots to mass produce products we use, but in the 20th century, it was new for people. The scientific innovations were not easily accepted, especially when it was replacing workers.

A change that the Industrial Revolution made was the types of jobs people were doing. Before the boom in manufacturing, factory jobs were physically demanding, harsh jobs. These jobs were no longer to be seen after the Industrial Revolution. Rather than doing the job of the machine, employees would soon be required to do different skilled work, such as maintenance for the new machines.

So now that we’ve seen the vast ways in which technology has affected society in the past and shaped our modern world, we must analyze the current state of technology and the more recent age of computers. No, the machines have not taken over, not yet, at least, but it is no mystery that the invention of computer processing has reshaped our entire society. In small-scale situations, technology like laptops and phones have sped up human productivity to blistering paces and changed what the modern-day office looks like. It was not long ago that the stereotypical office space of the late 1900’s and early 2000’s was established. The work day consisted of commuting 30-40 minutes to a “9-5” job in a cubicle-filled office space. The day was filled with meetings and paperwork. This image is quickly changing, however.

Due to the increased connectivity gained from modern technology businesses and corporations are switching over from expensive office buildings to having small headquarters with the majority of their employees working from satellite locations and often working from home connecting to meetings and corresponding via email and text message. I have seen this personally affect my life as both of my parents, within the past two years, have switched from commuting to office work to being a remote employees. My mom’s entire company is actually built around this idea of allowing employees to work from wherever they want and, therefore, doesn’t even own a main office headquarters. This has allowed my family to move to their dream house on the southern coast of North Carolina. So, obviously, this change in culture has greatly benefited me and my family.

Modern technology is already shaping society immensely as it is, but this is nothing in comparison to how future technologies may impact everything about human existence. Nothing is more pertinent to this discussion than, For example, an interactive guide showing how likely it is that certain jobs will be automated within 20 years by NPR and Planet Money. This guide allows you to input the general categorization of any occupation and uses four unique heuristics to determine the likeliness that a robot or some nonhuman technology will fill its role:

Do you need to come up with clever solutions?

Are you required to personally help others?

Does your job require negotiation?

Does your job require you to squeeze into small spaces?

These categories highlight the current strengths and weaknesses of A.I. and where the most advancements will most likely be made. A.I. struggles with coming up with solutions for non-specific tasks it has not been programed to solve; therefore, as of now, any job that has high levels of problem-solving and that requires the employee to “come up with clever solutions” is not a job that will be taken by robots. On the other hand, any job that involves small spaces will most definitely be taken by a robot as they are able to be made at smaller and smaller levels rather quickly. Thus, a robot would be able to fill the role much more efficiently and safely.

The Future Implications of Technology and Automation

This is a podcast that perfectly discusses the employee and employer perspective of A.I. In the interview, they discuss three possible future scenarios for the job market post-automation: what skills are important as things change, why automating jobs often creates more demand for the skills being automated, and the biggest popular misconceptions about the capability of A.I.

This book describes the new and interesting way that predictive modeling is changing the field of actuarial science. It is fascinating to see how technology is changing the field that I hope to enter come graduation time. On a broader scale, the topic of A.I., progressive technology, and the transitioning of jobs from humans to machines is an extremely interesting and important topic. This book will help me refine my thesis by giving me more insight into the finer details of automation and, in particular, automation of actuary jobs.
