NURSE EDUCATOR

Much like new pilots using flight simulators and taking early flights under the watchful eye of a flight instructor, practicums allow talented learners to apply concepts and lessons in a supervised environment. It is difficult to imagine a pilot flying without a flight plan. For specialty nurse learners, a practicum agreement, or Practicum Experience Plan (PEP), serves as that plan. A foundational step of constructing a PEP is the development of a set of learning objectives, which maps your PEP. These objectives will guide the practicum experience toward desired outcomes. To effectively do this, the objectives should be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound). (Note: In the Practicum Manual, these are referred to as your individualized learning objectives.)Refer to the College of Nursing Practicum Manual: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) for information related to the Practicum.Further reflect on your goals related to experience and growth as a nurse educator. Then develop the final version of your practicum objectives that you proposed in this week’s Discussion and include them in your Practicum ExperienceTo prepare•    Think about areas for which you would like to gain specialty-level experience and/or continued growth as a nurse educator. This should be the specialty clinical area you focused on in the Discussion Question. How can your experiences in the Practicum help you achieve these aims?•    Review the information related to developing objectives provided in this week’s Learning Resources.•    Based on this week’s Discussion, incorporate any feedback you received from your colleagues and instructor and finalize the three individualized practicum learning objectives that you want to achieve during your Practicum experience. These objectives must be:o    Specifico    Measurableo    Attainableo    Results-focusedo    Time-boundo    Reflective of the higher-order domains of Bloom’s taxonomy (i.e., Application level and above)Note: please make sure your objectives are based on the key concepts as outlined in your Professional Experience Plan (PEP).•    Discuss your professional aims and your proposed Individualized Practicum Objectives with your Practicum preceptor to ascertain if the necessary resources are available at your Practicum site.
