Religion geography

Ponder the reading you have completed in Half the Sky. All of Half the Sky should have been read by the time you respond to this Discussion Board forum. The following quotations from the book offer points to reflect upon:
“Then they took the door off so that the hyenas would get me.”
“My parents were ill, and they couldn’t afford sending me to school. Since I am the oldest child, my parents asked me to drop out and help with the housework.”
Locate two articles published in the New York Times within the past five years relating to your reading in Half the Sky; one article can be from the Opinion section, but at least one article must be a piece of news reporting or investigative journalism, not an article taken from the Opinion section. Provide a link to the article in a section marked References. The References section must also include an entry for Half the Sky (MLA, APA, Chicago, are acceptable; see Purdue Owl for guidelines: Purdue OWL // Purdue Writing Lab). This is the last section of the assignment.
Read the following prompts and choose one to consider for an essay you are tasked to write. Respond to one (and only one) of the following prompts in an essay of no less than 600 words, which must be written and saved in a Microsoft Word document:
Explain why it is important to educate girls in LDCs. Discuss strategies that might be implemented to facilitate higher levels of female literacy.
Explain health issues relating to women in LDCs, with particular reference to fistulas and maternal mortality during childbirth. What might be effective ways to address these problems and what are feasible strategies for individual Americans to render aid?
Use examples from Half the Sky and the New York Times articles you selected to craft your essay. Do not use any sources other than Half the Sky and the New York Times.
After writing this essay, write a question of no less than 20 words, which is directed to the class. It is important for students to realize that questions posed must generate dialogue about the subject being examined, and it is imperative that this dialogue relies on facts, not opinions. Given that, the quality of the question posed by each student is considered in grading their entries, as well as the quality of the question responded to by students, in addition to their essays. Normally, questions that ask fellow students merely about their opinions are considered inadequate. Students must show analytical thinking in designing the questions they pose, as these questions task their fellow students to draw from their assigned readings and outside sources to generate profound conclusions. Not only are students penalized heavily for raising simple-minded questions asking for opinions (for example, but not limited to a preface of “What do you think …” or “What would you do…..” or “Have you ever…”), students choosing to answer these simple-minded questions are also penalized. In a similar vein, students are highly discouraged from (discussing or) asking each other about personal experiences, hypothetical situations, and/or personal religious beliefs. An individual student’s personal religious affiliation is considered largely irrelevant to an examination of the subject matter of this course.
Overall, no less than 620 words are to be written. Once the assignment has been written in a Microsoft Word document, it must be saved. Then it must be proofread. Be sure that your writing is carefully organized in distinguishable paragraphs; do not present your writing in one long paragraph.
Copy your assignment from the Microsoft Word document and paste it in the text box in the appropriate Discussion Board forum. Do not submit the Microsoft Word document as an attachment. If the assignment is submitted as a Microsoft Word document attachment, no credit will be received for this exercise. If more than one thread is posted, no credit is awarded for this exercise. If the minimum-word requirement is not met, no credit is awarded for this exercise. Quoting parts of any readings is prohibited; paraphrasing is required. The due date for this assignment can be found in the Due Dates section on Blackboard.
Note: Each student is tasked with submitting one—and only one— posting for each Discussion Board forum. Please read directions carefully and follow them accordingly. In completing assignments, use only use assigned course materials; these include Globalization and Diversity, Half the Sky, videostreams linked to Discussion Board forums, and assigned articles and podcasts (where relevant), in addition to New York Times articles selected by students.
