Having been kept in the dark, both literally and metaphorically, the light blinds the wise man. The light is too brilliant for him to see and comprehend. Due to his beliefs, he educated himself anew, demonstrating that just because you believe in something that no one else does, it shouldn’t stop you. This wise man made me realize that we, as people, believe everything we see or hear. But do we ever take the time to stop and think about the things around us? Today, education tends to favor this allegorical theme by promoting that sight is there to be used for our knowledge and for educating ourselves, without second-guessing our choices. In the cave, Plato talks about how the group of men was born and raised there. They were born in chains, unable to move their hands, heads or legs, forced to remain in one place, unable to break free.

The chains keep them from leaving, unable to explore outside the cave. They are not utilizing their knowledge or questioning their situation; all they have is the cave in front of them. Afterwards, Plato talks about how some of the prisoners end up following him into the light, being able to see what he saw, while others didn’t agree with him.

From the beginning of the story, Plato, a wise man, show us why it’s not okay to imprison our mind or ourselves. Just because they’ve locked you in a cave and told you that you can’t leave or be free, you shouldn’t just give up – you should use your knowledge and go see what’s out there. For example, when the prisoners followed him, he had to re-educate himself; he managed to see the truth and open his mind to leave the cave.

Reading his story has also opened my mind. As college and high school students, we constantly question ourselves, even though we possess knowledge and understanding. Somehow, we always second-guess ourselves or quit before even trying. I realized we aren’t too different from the prisoners in the story. Despite being shown what’s happening, we still find a way to second-guess everything. Just like in the story, they witnessed the light inside the cave and brought some friends who were inside the cave to see it, but those friends were unhappy and rejected what had been discovered.

In the story, Plato, the wise man, tells us that if the prisoners could, they would have killed this person. This is a very brief and crude telling of the allegory. What follows is a more in-depth commentary on one of the most potent allegories ever to be gifted to humankind. The prisoner could have been killed from the moment he began to ask existential questions to the moment he decided to leave the cave. He went through five stages of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual evolution: Search, Struggle, Breakthrough, and Returning. Upon leaving the cave, he used this knowledge to find another exit.

To exemplify: a successful businessman who finds out he has cancer and might not make it chooses to share this news with his employees. However, he soon realizes that those working for him for years are only worried about their jobs.

He shares this news with his family, only to discover that they are concerned about inheriting his estate. Or consider someone like her, who, upon the passing of a friend, yearns for a more profound understanding of life. Think of the man on his deathbed, who realizes, after his friends and family leave, that he is all alone. Only he himself must answer the philosophical questions. He realizes that if he doesn’t fight for his life or turn things around, he won’t see his family anymore. While on his deathbed undergoing treatment, he fights cancer and finds out he is going to make it with the treatment working to destroy the cancer cells. His reward is being alive, getting a second chance to relive his life, and make it better. Similarly, Plato left the cave, seeing the world for the first time and using his knowledge to find freedom. Both men were given a second chance to live but didn’t give up. They pushed themselves and discovered what awaited them – unafraid to take a chance, understanding that they might get hurt, or that others may or may not follow. It’s okay not to second-guess yourself and take a leap of faith.”
